3 Things That Actually Helped Me Accept My Body

Body acceptance is a necessary part of healing your food relationship for most.

 

It's also the toughest part for many.

 

Lifting restrictions, giving yourself full permission, facing your feelings can feel like a walk in the park compared to accepting your body especially if you've been trying to lose weight for ages.

 

While treating the symptoms is important and can help alleviate immediate pain i.e. stopping the binge eating and food obsession, we must heal at the root for long-term freedom.

 

Meaning: We must find body acceptance.

 

So here are 3 things that actually helped me accept my body more (that might help you too):

 

1) REMEMBER THAT YOUR BODY WILL NOT STAY EXACTLY THE SAME FOREVER

 

It will change, whether it's from pregnancy, weight gain, period bloating - the sooner you can allow for fluctuations, the easier life gets.

 

I like the mantra, "Just like life, my body will go through ups and downs. And that's ok."

 

2) QUESTION WHETHER YOUR POOR BODY IMAGE MOMENT IS REALLY ABOUT YOUR BODY

 Or is your body an easy target (in a world where a woman's worth is so closely linked to her appearance)?

 

Is scrutinising your body a distraction from something else?

 

Like lack of purpose or fulfilment in life? Or stress, lack of worth.

 

I always notice that when I'm being hard on my body, I'm also not happy in other areas of my life already like work or my relationship. I often realise that nothing has even changed about my body - just my mindset has.

 

3) PAUSE ANYTHING THAT REMINDS YOU THAT HOW YOU LOOK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT YOU

For example weighing yourself, comparing yourself to fitness influencers or checking in the mirror excessively.

 

It doesn't have to be a permanent change but give yourself the chance to find body acceptance by removing obvious triggers for a while.
